ningbo fun facts 101·legendary streets episode 9 heyi road -pg电子游戏麻将胡了
for most of us, heyi road is quite a familiar spot. but do you know where the name comes from?
it is said that the road derived its name from one of the six ancient city gates. a local city map of the qing dynasty indicates that during the reign of the emperor qianlong (1736-1795 a.d.), ningbo could be accessed through six city gates, namely dongdu gate, lingqiao gate, changchun gate, wangjing gate, yongfeng gate, and heyi gate. in the 1930s, the city walls were torn down to make room for modern roads. the names of the six gates were then assigned to each branch of the new thoroughfare. hence, the original site of heyi gate was named heyi road. previously, heyi road connected the municipal kindergarten to the east and the soybean product factory to the west. in between lie china’s first girls’ school — yongjiang girls’ school — and the time-honored local cuisine restaurant — ningbo zhuangyuanlou restaurant (i.e., ningbo zhuangyuanlou (number one scholar) hotel). the nostalgic night market used to draw a sizable crowd. modern heyi avenue, however, accommodates a high-end shopping center of luxury brands. built with a backward terrace, the multistory plaza presents a cheerfully decorated scene at the riverside.
